Cape Fear Middle School fire alarm sends students outside

Dec 22, 2023

Classes at Cape Fear Middle School were briefly interrupted after a fire alarm sent students and their teachers outside.

Officials from Pender County Schools reported a malfunction in the boiler room caused by a rubber bushing, which was used a buffer between parts.

Bob Fankboner, communications coordinator for the district, said smoke from the room triggered the alarm, but there was no fire.

"The fire alarm did its job and the kids were back in about 10 minutes later," Fankboner said.

Firefighters from the Pender County area responded to assist the school with the situation. Everyone went back inside the building and learning continued. There were no injuries reported Monday afternoon.
