More and more people attach phones to their motorcycles (and most anything else). As a result, the number of companies entering the motorcycle mount market is increasing. Peak Design is a new player in the moto phone mount "industry." But they have been around for a while with travel bags, camera gear, tripods, and phone accessories.

Recently, Peak contacted me and asked if I would be interested in trying out their motorcycle phone mount. I’m always happy to try a new product, so Peak Design has sent me a their vibration damping mount. It's on my bike now and will be tested as I ride from Vermont to Alaska and back this summer.

My first impression is that the mount looks pretty sturdy. It is made from machined and anodized aluminum and uses stainless steel fasteners. And in a nice touch, those fasteners already have a drop of thread locker on them.

The mount can accommodate different size handlebars using one of the three included circular rubber inserts. Installation is a breeze. Because the handlebar mount is hinged, all you have to do is choose the correct size insert for your handlebar, open the mount and close it over the handlebar. Then tighten one bolt, and the mount is securely fastened to your bike. In addition, if you do not want to mount your phone to the handlebar, Peak Design has a similar system that uses your steering stem.

The head holding your phone is adjustable for positioning. You can easily position your phone with one bolt for your preferred viewing angle. Interestingly, the robust mount is also smaller than other mounts, so it takes up less real estate on your bike. Your phone will be the biggest part of the setup.

The Peak Design mount's biggest feature is its claimed vibration damping. Peak says that its system is the best in class. We’ll find out in the next few weeks.

To use the Peak Design mount, you will need to purchase a phone-specific case or Peak's glue-on adapter. Unfortunately, Peak did not have a case for my specific phone, so I will be using the adapter. If there's a weak link, I fear the adapter may be it. But it does seem quite sturdily attached to my phone case at present.

The solid aluminum mount retails for $99.95. Dedicated phone cases for iPhone, Samsung, and Pixel are available for $39.95. This pricing makes the mount a somewhat pricey proposition but is not out of line with other vibration damping mounts.

We will have a full review in a few weeks after we have the chance to test it in both on and off-road environments. Stay tuned.
