You don't have to go through hoops to make your bathroom stand out!

New Orleans-based Next Wave designer Whitney Jones of Whitney J Decor sets herself apart with a carefree approach to bold colors and pattern mixing. And, as a social media influencer, she's always sharing tutorials and tips with her followers so they can revamp and personalize their own spaces. Jones's latest DIY? A stylish custom shower curtain.

"I am sure I’m not the only one that experiences disappointment when looking for shower curtains in retail stores, and because of this, I’ve actually been making my own custom shower curtains for years," Jones reveals to House Beautiful. Not only is this a less expensive way to get a custom look, it's also an easy way to add instant pattern to your bathroom without going all in on paint or wallpaper. "Besides the fact that you can make your custom shower curtain any size you want, the fabric is available in unlimited styles/patterns/colors, giving you a truly custom design," says Jones. Here, she breaks down how to do it.

To get the measurements right, Jones recommends that you use an old shower curtain, lining it up with the fabric you want and cutting to size (Note: You'll likely need two pieces of fabric to reach the right width; if so, sew these together first. ). If you don't have an old shower curtain laying around, measure the length of your entire shower rod (including any curves or angles, so the curtain can cover the whole shower).

Fold each side edge in 1/2 inch. Stitch each side along the folded edges. Then, fold each side edge again, this time 1 inch. Stitch along the stitch line you previously made. Do the same for the top of the curtain.

Fold the bottom edge in 1/2 inch. Stitch along the folded edge. Next, fold the bottom edge by 2 inches (for a visible hem) and stitch along the stitch line you previously made.

Mark the locations for your grommet holes along the top edge of your shower curtain, either using an old shower curtain as a guide or, if you don't have one, spacing them evenly every 2 inches or so. (Note: If you're using an additional liner, make sure to align the grommet holes with the ones on the liner).

Follow the instructions provided in your grommet kit to apply the grommets along the top edge of your shower curtain.

Slide curtain rings through the grommet holes and, if you're using a liner, through the holes on the liner.

Hang your rungs on your curtain rod and voilà—you've got a stylish new (bespoke!) shower curtain.
